2011 birthphotographers.com Photo of the Year contest!! {kansas city birth photographer}

The IAPBP and www.birthphotographers.com is have a 2011 Photo of the Year contest! I have an image in the running from Nathaniel’s birth, which was my one and only birth from last year!  So if you have a minute, head over to vote here!! My image is #32 but please vote for your favorite one- if that happens to be mine…fabulous!! There are some truly amazing images up for the award and I am honored to be included in this group of amazing photographers. All types of birth are represented here- hospital, homebirth, birth center, c-section…you name it! I love the diversity of the images and how they all show the beauty of birth and the miracle that it really is. I am hoping this contest will bring more awareness to birth photography (especially here in Kansas City) and that people see it for the true beauty that it is. Being a birth photographer is one of my great passions. It makes my heart so happy that I get to do what I love and I love what I do.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this and to vote!

Logan, 18 months {Kansas City Child Photographer}

When Logan’s mom contacted me about getting some photos done while they were in town from Florida, I was so-so-so excited! I photographed Logan’s first birthday party back in March and I was excited to get to see him again! In just the short 6 months since I saw him last, he had grown from a sweet little baby into a walking toddler full of personality! Logan and his parents are so sweet and I love that they ask me to be a part of their time while visiting friends and family here in KC. It did take a few minutes for Logan to warm up to the whole picture taking thing but once he “got it” he really got it!! We had so much fun running around and playing on the stairs:)Mom was not a fan of that- being that the stairs were metal and Logan was kind of obsessed with going up and down…and up and down again.

There was lots of other stuff to do so we quickly moved on- only pausing for a short-lived meltdown after being taken away from his beloved stairs. Dad and grandpa jumped in and made him laugh again:)  This boy loves his grandpa!

One of my favorite little girls. {Kansas City Child Photographer}

Ok, it’s almost February! Time to play catch up on all the sessions I haven’t blogged yet! I think at the end of February we might even do a fun contest with the prize being something really awesome:)

First up is Abigail. You guys all know Abigail, right? She was the second birth I ever photographed and I haven’t stop taking her photos since. She’s a whopping TWO YEARS OLD…well, two years and almost 5 months old now.  We headed out for some fun photos of her back in October on a beautiful fall day. This girl ALWAYS makes me smile. She’s like a little ray of happiness every time I see her- even if it’s on a computer screen! See for yourself!

Giving Back {Kansas City Child Photographer}

I’ve got about 9,549 sessions to blog about (ok, maybe a *slight* exaggeration) but I have been so busy with births and newborns that I haven’t had a chance to sit down and play catch up! It’s coming though, February will be my blogging moth:)  I did want to blog about something else though…

Over the past year, I have been trying to think of ways I could give back through my photography. There were a couple options I had looked into but I wasn’t ready to fully commit to any of them- either emotionally/or physically. I had a full time job, my business,  my family and a baby on the way, so there wasn’t a lot of extra time or flexibility to allow for anything additional. Since I left my full time job this past summer to focus on my family and my business, there is finally room for more:) I am more focused, more inspired- more ready- to give where I can. I wanted to work with a charity that spoke to my heart…and I found the perfect one: Tiny Sparrow Foundation. After spending some time on their website, I knew this was what I wanted to do.

The Tiny Sparrow Foundation is a non-profit organization that helps families with children facing life-threatening illnesses by providing memories of their journey through the art of photography.  With the help of photographers nationwide, they are able to gift  a beautiful album that will carry the love, joy and everlasting memory of each individual family. From the Tiny Sparrow website: ”In cultures throughout the world, the sparrow is a symbol for hope and rebirth. Though small, the beautiful bird is recognized for its resilient and nurturing characteristics. It represents our mission to bring hope and new life to children living with critical illness.”

One week after applying to be a photographer with Tiny Sparrow, I opened my email to see this:

Dear Sarah, You have been selected by the Photographer Review Committee as an official Tiny Sparrow Affiliate Photographer.

I was so thrilled to get the news that I had been accepted into the program, I actually got a little teary! I encourage you to visit the website and read some of the stories about these incredibly brave children. You can also support them on Facebook and see more beautiful photos there, as well as donate to their cause- if you are so inclined to do so. If you know of a family that would benefit from the Tiny Sparrow Foundation, please have them contact me or the foundation directly at families@tinysparrowfoundation.org.

I’m so very proud to be a part of this organization and am so excited to finally be able to give back through my photography. I think this is the perfect beginning to 2012:)  Thanks so much for reading this!!

The Birth of Nathaniel {Kansas City Birth Photographer}

This was my first (and last) birth of 2011- almost a year to the day from my last birth of 2010! After taking some time off of births during my pregnancy with Ryan and then more time off after he was born, I was SO ready to get back to shooting what I love most, births! Mr. Nathaniel had us all thinking he was going to come a little too early, but he held out long enough to not give us all a scare:)  His mother, Jessica, did so amazing in her labor! She had a planned epidural-free labor and birth. There were times she would drop her head and breath through a contraction, then sit right back up and laugh at hubby Wes’s jokes, ask for some ice or send someone a text. You wouldn’t even know she was in labor! I was in awe. It went on like this for most of the time up until the last hour or so when it got more intense. Nathaniel was born quickly and seemingly effortlessly:)  He is just the cutest little thing and I am so happy and thankful I got to be there to witness his Birth Day.

At one point Wes asked to use my backup camera so of course I said yes! It was fun to see him look at his brand new son through the camera lens and I was excited to see what he was able to get. The very last image in the slideshow is his. I love it.
